Face Fuck Book # 148--Dr. Yahudi

We met in Rome many years ago
Yahudi was an Israeli student
       finishing med school
       in love with classical music
Years later
       when my aged Aunt's
Internist was killed in an auto accident
Who was sitting behind his desk as his replacement? —Yahudi
We recognized each other immediately
We jabbered a bit in Italian
       our friendship rekindled
But life writes its own endings

After my Aunt's death
       he became my Internist
Helped me through some minor crisis'
He was very much in love with his nurse
A tall shapely ebony woman from Haiti
       strikingly beautiful
Of course no one was supposed to know
I would lend him my jeep
the keys to a summer cabin I rented
Three years later she was dead of cancer

I attended the funeral
       her two children greeted me
       her husband was silent
Time passed
       Yahudi married
       his mother picked
       a child was born
We remained friends
       exchanged gift and cards
       would meet by chance
       embrace as if brothers

The office called me early
       the morning of a checkup
Yahudi was in the hospital
       a brain tumor
I went to the hospital
       he had refused visitors
        the surgery left him blind
Little by little he regained some sight
       was in a wheel chair
I would send him letters
       printed in extremely large fonts
He would respond in chicken scrawl
I asked repeatedly to visit
       he refused
Our monthly letters
       turned yearly
I continued to write
offered to take him to concerts
       anything he liked
       he refused
I learned he had recovered
       but would never practice again
       still refused my visit
Did I remind him
       of his once flourishing practice?
       forced to abandon?
Was it another illness he was battling?
Did the brain surgery
       alter his personality?
The fact that I knew of his affair?
The two burnt voodoo dolls I found
       outside the cabin?

I don't know
Soon it will be time to write
I must prepare his letter....

If I get the time

I will post this as a one of the best examples on subverting linearity , it is that good, as regards to pacing, and to the fact that the reader CANNOT get to the end before you let him. Always a good thing.

kiki, this is one of a series of 70-80 poems-- Face Fuck Book

where the protagonist tells of people he has known, as if found on FB, however since most of the people mentioned were in intimate relationships, hence the FFB to denote the sexual aspect of the relationship--best regards, er

Poignant

Nice poem. Especially the two burnt voodoo dolls - that really twisted it in. Why Face Fuck Book? 5 stars.
