Don’t tell me it’s you
Knocking at my door
It’s too late for that
My welcome mat's rolled up
And I won't listen anymore

But there you are
Wanting a second chance
You wanna make peace
You wanna make it alright
You wanna break my heart again

I’ll be damned if I let you in
I’ll be damned if I open this door
You can knock all you want
And plead your case ‘til dawn
But I’ll be damned if I
Let you in once more

You left me in love with you
With no clue that you’d stay gone
You left me to wait and wonder
About that sad, sad smile
And a note that arrived
Just a little later on
“I don’t write to just you anymore.”

You didn’t knock on my door then
To see if I was doing alright
Or call to see if I’d been crying
No, there was nothing to do
Except let a broken heart mend
Now you stand here whining
With your sad sob story
Oh, how it was so awful for you

No sir, your tune's gone astray
These ears turned deaf
When you rang tonight
These eyes turned blind
When you stepped in their way

And I’ll be damned
If I let you in
I’ll be damned
If I open this door
My heart took too long getting over you
And it’ll be damned
If I let you in once more

Damaged Goods

A very sad poem. I'm the type of person that people like to talk to. That's probably why I chose the profession I did. I've heard these words before by people that have gotten dumped and didn't know why. In some cases I knew both sides. Many times the dumper was immature, insecure, sensitive and had trust issues. They couldn't handle a deep relationship. They would keep trying, sometimes lasting two years before having to bail. Usually, feeling lonely afterwards and try getting back together. This doesn't make the person a bad person, just damaged and not knowing how to fix it. They don't have any control over their irrational fears. Probably originated while growing up, becoming a part of their character. These people are doomed to keep hurting others until they finally give up and end up spending their life alone because they hate hurting people or seek professional help. And most times that doesn't even help. Hopefully, the person's scars from encountering these damaged people will heal and they can move on to a healthy relationship. Unfortunately, some become just as damaged like the person that hurt them.

I agree with rexspaulding -

Not simply a poem - that is a song waiting to be sung. I know just the singer to do it, too...

Hell Hath No Fury...

Powerful, flowing and captivating - words to describe this poem. It would seem more women ought to have this mindset with foolish men who don't know what treasure they had. Too bad, so sad, get out.

But I must inquire - did you have a melody of sorts in your, mind while composing this? It seems to flow so fluidly that music dances just beneath the surface.
