The far-off landscape through thick, dirty glass
declines too fast for genuine observation,
at first unnoticed – then the first elation
becomes dejection as the views amass:
a wild variety of trees and grass,
the backs of houses, then some sleepy station –
they quickly shed or change each connotation
to get more meaningless each time you pass
and as the eager eye grows tired, the scene
drops form and outline, and so redefines
the shape of things in terms of empty sky
and insubstantial streaks, as on the screen
in quick succession badly focussed lines
in shades of brown and green come hissing by.
