Look closely at those eyes

At the truth silent spoke

Of confidence in answers given

Or terror of thoughts blank...

An extra curriculum take

I have a humorous (ironic) read to your poem. I assume that you did not mean for it to be read that way, but I hope that some humor would not offend you.

I could have sworn that I am back at those dreaded ‘life determining’ (so we believed) testing times. I believe we have all been there. We were looking over our shoulders in a desperate effort to find a whispered answer. When the suspicious stare of the teacher crosses our field of vision, we were again (hopefully) the picture of innocence and full concentration. Now, our searching eyes were targeting only the best phrase to put on paper...

We indeed tried to be as silent as we could, but I have no doubt that our experienced teachers had a tiny knowing smile, as if saying: “Oh, yes, you are all such marvelous things to behold, especially the truth in those eyes!”

BTW, I was wondering, if this poem is based on personal experience what grade where the students?
