I heard him chirp
out of beat
from the water song
dew drops
releasing their grip
one by one
a splashing mess
along the porch
like droplets
from a horse's lip
I heard the cricket
nestled in the house
dry as barn straw
out of the storm
thanking me
with a nerving lyric
a monotone fiddling
with dark seeded legs
his natural violin
I embraced the thunder
that drowned his concert
and made him silent
if only for a moment
until he began again
off key and loud
singing all wrong
the cricket's song
