As for the alliteration, how about an extra line break to give the reader a pause:
So Many cannot
they are only looking
transient images, vacuous faces
nameless shifts and madding mobs
merely meeting in meandering
manners manifold maunderings
My maudlin drinks
Am I the pianoman
or Only the Trumpeteer
but felt the expansive alliteration at the end was too much and detracted from the whole.
