I suspect I am not alone in that I often write something that feels right and then wonder what I meant.
In this case I am reasonably sure of what was going through my mind at least. The visitor is some official - gradually changing into death itself. The 'other one' is pretty well the spouse. I did not have a soldier in mind as the person visited was not at all expecting the visit (building barns). Husband with heart attack or car crash - that sort of thing.
The person visited could be man or woman but I think I always thought of the person as her.
Fallen solider? That's what it makes me think of. It's a well crafted piece though.
