If the husband was OK with his wife doing this, they could have started much sooner. Also, there was no reason for her to withhold this information. She could have shared it shortly after her husband left for Iraq.

If birth control was the only reason for "no intercourse", there are many precautions available, with a condom being the easiest. However, I agree that a condom means there would be no cream pie and that was part of the thrill of this story.
