After taking the time to craft a tale which involves a protagonist who is dead-set against cheating, time and again creating situations where the protagonist's response is one that only confirms the premise of your tale, you suddenly take the story in a completely opposite direction? That is half-assed and lazy writing, sir.

If you're going to make a sea-change in the protagonist's mind set and behavior, then it is your responsibility as an author to ensure that the story you tell includes the exposition and details necessary for your readers to understand that change. You didn't bother to do that...and I've read your other work, so I **know** that you're talented enough to accomplish this.
