I laughed. "Wow," I said. "Um . . . congratulations. Is it a boy or a girl?"

Lacey blushed. She wasn't wearing makeup, and suddenly reminded me of the eighteen-year-old beauty from six and a half years before. She touched her stomach.

"It's a boy," she said. Her beautiful eyes flashed to me. "You wanna feel?"

I smiled, mesmerized by her pregnant belly. I settled my hand on my cousin's firm, rounded stomach. I felt slight motion beneath, and gasped. "Holy shit," I muttered.

Lacey laughed. Her eyes bored into mine. "I-I wanted to tell you," she said. "I-I mean . . . I should have. I'm sorry."

I shook my head. "It's okay," I said. "I've been busy, anyway." I gently smoothed my hand over Lacey's naked belly as she pulled up her loose blouse. "So, uh . . . if I'm your cousin, what's that make me to him? Uncle?"

Lacey laughed, then suddenly cupped my face as her smile drained away. "It makes you 'daddy,'" she whispered, giving me a serious look.

I stared at her for a long moment, my heart suddenly thumping in my chest. "Wh-what?"

Lacey kept her eyes locked on mine. "He's our little boy, Markie," she said in a strained voice. Her eyes moistened with tears. "Yours and mine."

I shuddered, swallowing nervously. "A-are you—"

"Yes," she said, nodding. "When I found out I was pregnant, I asked for a blood test. I didn't tell Jeff. Markie, honey . . . our baby's blood type is the same as yours. I'm carrying your son."

I breathed out, feeling overwhelmed. I leaned against the snow-covered railing, trying to calm myself.

"Markie, it's okay," said Lacey.

I looked to her. "I'll do whatever you want, whatever you need," I said. "I-I'll support you, I promise—"

Lacey suddenly laughed. "Markie, relax," she said. She stepped up beside me, insinuated her face before mine. "I don't want anything from you. You already gave me the one thing I always wanted, and you can't believe how happy I was to find out that I'm having your baby."

I gave her a confused look. "But . . . Jeff . . . what's he gonna think?"

Lacey's eyes dipped. She felt a little ashamed, I knew, just as I did. "Well, in case you haven't noticed, Jeff's tall, dark, and handsome, just like you. However our little boy comes out, no one's gonna know it's not Jeff's."

I was quiet for a long moment. I was going to be a father, but the mother of my first child was not my wife. Still, it all seemed right. Lacey and I had shared so many firsts in our lives . . . why not our first child?

"I'd like to come see him," I said, looking to her.

Lacey's eyes dripped. "Any time you want," she said. "I promise."

I smiled, sniffed. "Jeff will be a good father," I said.

She nodded. "The best," she agreed. "Next to you."

I took my cousin in my arms, hugged her tightly. She shuddered against me, and I held her until her tears stopped flowing. Finally, I let her pull back, and wiped her eyes. Lacey smiled up at me.

"Come on," I said. "Let's go get some egg-nog."

Lacey laughed, squeezed my hand. "Okay, but no rum for me," she said.

***

Lacey's son, whom she insisted on naming Mark Jeffrey Baines, was born on April 3rd of the following year. Lacey and Jeff sent out announcements right way, alerting everyone to the birth of their healthy, eight-pound baby boy.

About a week later, I was checking my private email, and noticed a message from Lacey. No text, no subject, but there was a single attachment, a .jpg image. I clicked on it, and was treated to the sight of a tiny infant in a hospital nursery crib, flailing his chubby little arms and legs about. And superimposed across the bottom of the picture were the words, "Hi, Daddy!"

I couldn't help but cry.My little boy, I thought, and touched the screen.

"Honey?"

Lana's voice jolted me back to reality. I closed the image, logged off the computer, wiped my eyes as my wife stepped into the room. She gave me a quizzical look.

"You okay, honey?"

I nodded, smiling upon her. "You wanna have a baby?"

Lana's features melted, and she swooned. "Oh, honey . . . ."

Wish they didn't cheat on their spouses, especially having Lacey make her husband raise her cousin's kid in secret. Paternity Fraud is a morally corrupt crime that isn't punished nearly enough

Oh my. I’ve got tears in my eyes. What a beautiful, bittersweet love story. It’s interesting how a make believe story can stir that much emotion. Thank you for writing it.

I think you did it right.

Generally, I liked the story with two reservations.

The first, another commentator pointed out about the impossibility of having sex as described while in a Western saddle. She'd have a saddle horn in her crotch, if she was attempting to straddle his waist.

The second is that this is yet another story that perpetuates the oft-repeated myth about an internal hymen. The hymen is at the entrance to the vagina and not somewhere inside. There is no pushing partway inside and then hitting an obstruction. If you're inside at all, you've already passed her hymen and taken her virginity.

I could see a sequel to this story, where Mark and Lana have a little girl, named Lacey Lana. The cousins continue to get together over the years, and Mark Jeff and Lacey Lana fall in love. Since they are purportedly "second cousins", they get married (2nd cousins can marry in all states), never knowing they are actually half-siblings.

That was the best story

A love story

That didn't end right. They should have married and legally can in several states.

Touched me deeply

A wonderfully well-written story, and it rattled a good many bones in my closet. One writer above said,

"As for the comment somebody made about cheating on their spouses: Given the human penchant for rationalizing, it's possible to convince yourself that your first love---your cousin---is the one to whom you owe faithfulness; marrying someone else is almost like adultery (cheating on your cousin) or even bigamy. When you look at it in broad daylight, it's twisted and obviously wrong, but when you still love your cousin so much it hurts, it almost makes sense. (For the record, she and I have been completely faithful to our legal spouses.) I did not father any of her children, but she named her son after me and I've often dreamed that he was mine."

Our experience was so similar it's scary. We grew up in Nebraska, where cousin-marriage is illegal; as it is in KS, MO, IA, SD, WY. We didn't know about CO. I went through the same mental/moral gymnastics as the Anonymous I've quoted (about owing your faithfulness to your cousin). She named a son after me and I named a daughter after her. Likewise, we have both been completely faithful to our legal spouses. The hole in my heart is still bleeding and raw.

For the record: (1) 300 acres is a mighty small ranch in Kansas. (2) Having sex in the saddle with her facing him just wouldn't work, b/c the saddle horn would either go up her twat or up her arse, neither of which is conducive to enjoyment--& probably lead to permanent damage! (Check the actual size & shape of a saddle horn!) It could be done bareback, of course. (3) Making love in the haymow without putting a blanket or two down would be awfully uncomfortable; both people would end up with multiple scratches and other itches on the parts of their body that came in contact with the hay (presumably the girl's neck, back, and legs, and the guy's knees and elbows?).

Artificial drama, They could have been together

I really can't see why it would be such a problem for them to be together, seems like an artificial barrier, I didn't even get the sense that the parents would have minded, because whatever supposed taboo, didn't make anyone in the know care about them fucking, so I can't see why marriage would be a problem .

Ruined the story for me, especially when they cheated on their spouses and had a child anyway.

Makes me wonder where the author is from since he consider cousins together such a problem.

This needs a rewrite to remove the contrivance of them not getting married, they could have worked on finding colleges close to each other, and then moving to the same place and gotten married afterwards when they were a bit older so it wouldn't come across as a youthful infatuation.
