As far as your comment at the beginning about this being "Overly long", people don't get tired of reading a story that is well thought out and written. This could be novel length and definitely has the potential to go there. If it gets to that length, I for one would be happy to read it at least twice. So, go where you feel it needs to go to tell it like you want to. Don't worry about the ones that might decide for you that it is too long. Just tell the story like you feel it should be told. I am looking forward to the next installment, and I hope there are many more before you are done. Thanks for sharing it with us.
