that a great basic story is totally spoilt by the apparent fact that the author never paid any attention to the grammar and punctuation lessons most children are offered at school.

There are a lot of errors. But even so, for me, the story was quite well done, and I'm willing to forgive such errors if the story and characters grab me. In this story, they have. I found the ending poignant, yet hopeful. I would have enjoyed seeing more of her writing.
