Very intriguing start, looking forward to the rest of the story
The problem with relying on espionage it much like peeling an onion. After meticulously pulling off a thousand layers, one by one by one, there is nothing left but a pile of confusion of identical tissues. Each of which will cause you to shed tears of regret.
One of the keey causes of the collapse of the Soviet Union, was their reliance upon espionage. The information gained took so long to work through their creaky apparatus by time it got to anyone who could actually use it, that data was more often obsolete then not.
A cruel practical joke for us sneaky Yanks to play upon the delicate sensitivities of those poor foolish commies as they russian here and russian there trying to catch up with the American technological juggernaut.
