I'm not sure it's necessary to begin each story with a recap of the previous chapters. If your writing is good enough, readers will go back to read them. I can let that go, however, since you're the one telling this story. What is more difficult to "let go" is the recap near the conclusion of the chapter. It's just filler. If we've read the story from the beginning, we KNOW what you've just summarized. It's beating a dead horse. Hammering a nailed nail. (Or what have you.) It's superfluous.
My apologies for the re-caps. They're probably included more for me as a reminder as I usually write in segments when time allows. By the way, Sue is now in her 80's and her husband passed away a few years ago. I haven't seen her nor spoke to her in over 20 years since I moved abroad.
