As to mom vs. mum, that usage depends on where you live. Regarding the anon who doesn't like mum and automatically gives a 1 to any story using that instead of mom. I lived in the U.K. for several years, I love my mum dearly for the opportunity to learn to appreciate other cultures. You should be happy in the diversity of writers here on Lit. not rant because they don't use the same terms of endearment as you.

Don't pay a lot of attention to the critics. This story is enjoyable and yes, there are probably ways you could have improved it but I can't think of any.
