It rings true,stories like this happen,maybe not as over the top.Are the women lesbian?Probably not but it doesnt matter...people do fall in love like this.I kind of like how sarah earlier in the story says she feels married,there is an old joke about what does a lesbian get for the second date? Sarah is probably more Gay than bi. But all human sexuality can be very complex, and this story shows it. Even though we know she is in love with Laura, her need to let go and be a woman needing a man is convincing.
