Very entertaining, and thoroughly plausible. The only thing which would have improved the story would be a footnote (or other comment) to demonstrate the inflation-adjusted value of the money. Depending upon exactly when the story is intending to be set, the value of that $15,000 would be in excess of $200,000 in terms of current dollars. Nice story!
