"Do you ever not sleep, lately?"
He heard the Voice and smelled the Scent. Both were still strong enough to make him scramble to his knees and boldly embrace the sandaled feet in front of him. Feverish lips rubbed on sheer nylon.
"Miss," he groaned, but the word was cut off by a devastating cough. The woman uttered a cry of dismay and tore her feet out of his embrace, cursing as she stepped back.
"Don't!" she yelled. "Don't you cough your slimy germs all over my feet. Get back!" He crawled back until his feet touched the wall of his cell.
"I'm sorry," he gasped.
"Are you ill?" she asked.
"No, Miss," he said. "I'm fine, real fine." And he coughed, before falling over.
