My thoughts are that she was druged the first time and blackmailed the second time, but that she went back of her own volition. One aspect that the wimp husband did not explore which would of proven that Ruth, the wife did in fact cheat on her husband. First third of this is so common that it's maddening. Again the wife is kept by the author from just coming out with what happened. How did he benefit? Instead take advantage of her (she's already taken advantage of him) and compel her to finally do as he wants, on threat of expulsion if she does not do it "willingly." Or better, as in this story, she realizes her foolishness and feeling guilty WANTS to make it up to him. Now he's got the wife. And the fantasies. He's not "vindicated," divorced, lonely, depressed and still deprived.

As for commenters concerns about disease. Not need to happen in fantasy fiction. Or you can put them through all the tests and clear them. But it's just delayed gratification while the situation is demanding immediate get-even banging.

And once they go down that route there is often almost no way back as was nearly the case for Ruth here.
