You mention the son reading Mickey Spillane paperbacks and the mother reading "bodice ripper" romance novels at one point, but if this is supposed to be taking place in the late 1920's to early 1930's (and I'm making a big assumption I admit) then mentioning these two pieces of media is a bit anachronistic. Spillane didn't start writing his Mike Hammer stories until the late 1940's and the term "bodice ripper" hadn't been coined until the 1970's.
