On the outside I am a woman who may appear to be quiet and shy -- perhaps even strangely out of reach, as some men have claimed -- but I really don't mean to be. One of my all-time favorite movies is Amateur, directed by Hal Hartley (1994). The main character, Isabelle, is a former nun who writes pornography while she waits to receive her special mission from God. At one point in the movie, she confesses to another character, Thomas, that she is a nymphomaniac. Given that she is still a virgin, he asks her how she can be a nymphomaniac and never have had sex? Her response has always powerfully resonated with me: I'm choosy. This is a nice summatation of my own sexuality/sensuality. While my actual sexual experience (and number of partners) has been minimal -- my potential for that experience is sweetly nymphomaniacal. I've just been choosy! ;)
