Would they be considered masterpiece today
Hyperbole and vision, all infused with derision
Why can’t a poem simply stop and tell
Loath that it be basic or unbearably mundane
For the common folk, it’s simply rather gauche
Let the counterpoint provide subtle clarity implied
But if form and rhyme applied then call it plain
Oh captain can you tell me why the easier to read
Grates on their souls like nails across the slate
There is beauty in a ball game, and such wonder in a child’s name
So does this punishment deserve the deed
Now critics, I do beg you, and dear readers hearken to me
speak of times when jump rope made you laugh
Let’s play tag and keep-a-way, let them live another day
We’ll be children once again in poetry
I suppose the poem's not too ostentatious but, really, I can't stand "hearken." lol Take sassy's advice and don't over do it with your words. That can get in the way of a good poem.
"jack and jill went up the hill..." something like that? :)
i do get your meaning. sometimes less is more. uncomplicated doesn't have to equate with mundane, but pretentious poetry can beat the life out of words. i suppose the trick is to find an effective medium...creative simplicity. i stress creative, because just simple could result in a waste of time for both reader and writer. then what would be the point?
what i like most about this poem is that it's thought provoking from the opening line, to the last. it made me examine my definition of poetry. i am constantly learning, so i appreciate the introspection. thanks fo the read.
