The day the Worlds came crashing down
The sky, its eagles grounded,
Lapsed to haunting, silent sound.
Where once there stood a skyline
Known all the world around
A funeral pyre of freedom
Rose from newly hallowed ground.
My stars and stripes and courage
Are stronger with my pain
My memory, in honor
of their lives,
-forever stained.
My heart beats at half-mast, today
My tears, like Towers, fall
My soul is tired, my spirit raw,
My ache wrapped up in calm.
But where strength is called to question,
I know that hardship gives it birth
And I hold this truth to be self evident:
That we will
forever stay
The Greatest Nation
on this earth.

Sapphos Sisterover 14 years ago.... tribute to those who died. My only reservation is with the last four lines (in essence, one line split over four). To me it's the only false note in the poem because it's clunky and spiritually seems at odds with the rest. Just my opinion.
HairRaisingWriterover 14 years agoHeather, I have to tell you this is one of the most amazing poems I've ever read. I definitely cried reading it and it touched my heart in a way I can't even describe. Once again you awe me with your writing talent! Just wanted to tell you before you took it down!
