The points made both in the story and in readers' comments about black men and white women can be seen as racist but frankly it happens too much for it to be a coincidence and that behavior itself could be seen as racist (i.e. a black man wanting a woman BECAUSE she is white). In case a few of you missed the point, the author showed his fairness (and NON-racism) when he showed the group of young blacks redeeming themselves and showing a conscience when they realised what they had allowed to happen - they eventually protected the white man and showed that they are only human after all - just like every other group, race or clan - every part of the community tends to look after their own kind, and it's not just blacks who do that.

There are some stories that are better in concept than in execution. An exploration of societal differences between races is not an inherently bad idea.

Unfortunately, this lacked any subtlety at all and just fed into a tremendous amount of stereotyping. Indolent black college students. Black men with prodigious genitals.
