Yes, this caught me off guard to see it went this way and that Wendy would be so cruel considering she didn't care for Nicole that much.

It was not that Wendy loved or cared so much for Nicole that lead to the betrayal. When Wendy watched the love connection and relationship that Nicole and Linda shared then measured her own unsatisfying relationship with Craig against that relationship she quickly developed a resentment towards Linda and Nicole. It has a lot to do with that "if I had only" or "it's their fault my life now sucks" thought pattern.
