Together with the view of the backside the criss-cross shading has the look and feel like something is protected from our view, even if there is complete nudity on display. It seems like a challenge to guess what's going on on the other side - is she reading a book, talking to someone in the background, watching something breath-taking?

It's stimulating, in more than one way.
