I have recently discovered Tanka, a 6th century Japanese poetry form, and I have been studying its layers of intricacies. I have found Tanka "speaks to me" on many levels; its brevity and succinct nature; its development of image; its "turn" or "unexpected middle", and its quiet introspect. This is my first attempt at Tanka, and I appreciate all feedback on this poetic form! Thank you to Equinoxe, for a very detailed and informative explanation of Tanka in the Poet's Forum! Thank you ElizaLoo and MaydayPilot for the encouragement!

Ephemeral kiss
You whisper soft endearments
Fade from earthly life
Ebbing autumn turns winter
Ghost white snow falls on stilled lips

Very nice. And now? A new kind of poetry to explore!

Twenty one words in five lines to impart so much. Brilliant

So much emotion evoked in so few words. And then that last line…

Exquisite.

Chilling….

And romantic….

Greater beauty is revealed in this Tanka with every reading. What poetry aspires to be.
