Sad circumstances that are familiar but hidden, there is no excuse for staying in a relationship where one partner is merely tolerated and oftentimes, abused.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Left again, haven’t you? No reason, no excuse,
just the sound of the door closing and your footsteps
crunching on the gravel path, fading.
Why again? I ask myself. No reason, no excuse,
just you being you, finding fault in everything,
hiding behind a smiling mask of superiority, gloating.
Waiting again, aren’t I? No reason, no excuse,
just the need for the familiar, even if it is indifference
clothed in doubt and endless needing.
Back again, then? No reason, no excuse,
just your footsteps drawing near and my eyes in need of sleep
and the comfort of mistrust and the solace of shame.

Your final line captures the complex emotional burden....

“The comfort of mistrust and the solace of shame.”

Powerful....

You perfectly described my parents’ relationship. Years after the divorce, despite everything he’d done, she still wanted him back.

As always, your words capture the feelings in such a powerful way.

Another thoughtful poem that directly hit my heart, and made me stop, sit and think.
