The Boston Naval Shipyard opened in 1800 and closed in 1974. Its purpose was to build, convert and repair warships. During the First World War over 450 vessels were repaired or fitted in the yard.

The USS Jacob Jones was a destroyer and only one of two American Naval vessels lost in combat in the First World War. On the 6th of December 1917 she was returning to her base in Queenstown in Southern Ireland from Brest whilst escorting a convoy. She was the last ship to leave Brest and was isolated from the other destroyers in the convoy when she was torpedoed at 4.20 in the afternoon. She sank in only eight minutes without any call of distress as her own armed depth charges exploded. Sixty six men died and forty six survived, but the death toll would have been higher but for the humanitarian action of the submarine commander Hans Rose. He surfaced and rescued two badly injured men and then radioed the US base at Queenstown the position of the survivors.
The exact position of the wreck remained unknown until August 2022 when it was located forty miles from the Scilly Islands and 115 metres deep. The ships bell has been recovered.

The term Jinx meaning something or someone that brings bad luck was first used in American English in 1910 in the book The Jinx by Allen Sangree.

I agree about the great read. I've had the mutton at Keen's Steak House, actually the only time I've ever had mutton and it was delicious! Their Trifle was another first for me, too. I hope Victoria had a chance to sample some.
5 Stars.
Very enjoyable. My only criticism are the quotation marks which are frequently missing or in the wrong place.
Another, well-written story with the plot continuing from part one. I knew nothing of the second-largest explosion of a non-atomic cause, a minor issue. You have described a very intelligent female with a desire for wealth, position, and intimacy. Her knowledge and ability to use it effectively are well done and make the story believable. The sex scene was credible and interesting as to the way she trained her nieve, virgin lover. I'm looking forward to part three.
Dear Blakkdan, Thank you for your comment and I am sure you are correct. My endnote should read....One of the ensuing explosions was AMONGST the largest man-made non-nuclear explosions on record. However hard I try mistakes always seem to creep in.
Hmm, as a Canadian I was taught that the largest man made explosion was the collision of the SS Mt Blanc and the SS Imo in Halifax harbour. That explosion on Dec 6, 1917 killed almost 1,800 people and injured thousands more. It even created a tidal wave that wiped out First Nations property.
Love the story otherwise.
