Best all around story I think you have EVER done

really. What makes it great is that you capture the essence of what it like .. what one has to be PREPARED to do to be a Man. This story is Not over stated and contrived. I just love this one.

A good Young Love story

A very good story a very young couple from high school on.. He had to prove to himself that he would protect her, regardless how outsized his opponent is.. I think most men are like this.. Mess with my girl, you're dog meat.

An excellent collaboration!!!

Well DG, any collaboration of yours with Jake Rivers (aka DJ) is bound to be good. I enjoyed Jake's contribution and found yours to be equally enjoyable. Although the stories and characters were different I find your writing styles to be very complementary. DG, I love your work – you frequently bring tears, whether of sadness or joy, to my eyes and I thank you for it. Pete.

Good romance

Very good romance. It is so funny to me to hear about using an equalizer. My Dad always told me that there is no such thing as a fair fight. Someone always has an advantage. He said don’t wait for the other guy to swing first and use whatever you can find to even things up. If it appears to be a one on one fight then take it on and see what you can do to them. Don’t ever let them get up till you are sure the fight is really over. That can be dirty fighting to some of my friends and to me it is whatever you think you need to do, short of a sucker punch, works for me. If you get the first blow in it certainly tilts the ring in your favor. I am a fairly built individual but there is always someone bigger and I have probably lost as many fights as won over the years. If I’m not being paid to keep the peace then whatever works for me is it. Being a bouncer is for suckers as you can and do get sued even when you are bonded by the establishment.
Thank God at my age, I am now smart enough to laugh at any instigators as it now seems kind of dumb the stuff we use to fight about. This story was a matter of honor and defense of a loved one and that will always be a whole different world

Well done as always. Thanks for the great entertainment!
PT

Nice effort!

Wow, 'DG,' high school was so long ago. Vicariously experiencing once again those travails of youth which we all thought insurmountable. Your story brought back memories, not necessarily of fighting, but just high school memories in general. That alone made this read worthwhile. While not the most sophisticated story or plot, you certainly accomplished your goal: putting an enjoyable and plausible tale to that song. Well done!

Can’t get much better than that

I feel a bit guilty - correction more then a bit guilty, make it very guilty for not getting to put few words of appreciation to this wonderful story. It happens to me sometimes, when I want to say more, then I postpone it a bit, and you see the result. So much for my Mia- Culpa. I have already commented on “Hey Joe”. As the famous line from Seinfeld goes: “Not that there is anything wrong with it”, from what I could see the two stories do not seem like a product of collaboration. The two plots are totally unrelated. But in their approach to the way of telling the story I did find similarity. I have no idea if you guys collaborated on that, or if it was accidental or perhaps the influence of being inspired by a poem? I am just throwing wild speculations I felt that both stylistically and thematically the two story shared a similar approach which bordering on epic (not by the number of pages though) We see in both stories a full picture of life; of a period in time; of a small society with its norms and customs. In fact, the story promises less and does more – just the way I like it (You get much more than you expect). The beauty of it is that the core plot and characters all come out more credible and winning of course. As I mentioned in my comments to “Hey Joe”, both authors let their heroes win the girl’s heart at the end, which makes most reader (as opposed to many authors in lit) mostly happy.

Another common quality is the masterful quality of the narrative. It gets credibly woven into the characters, understands them from within, and a bit more than they do themselves. You simply feel that you learn something about another corner of the American experience –and when it’s done right (true picture –including the grey and the dark shades) it just can’t get much better than that.

A Great Story

I loved the story DG I thought that Buddy was going to put the moves on Gloria i guess i feels like he got the short end of the bat so to speak.

Joey should have said yes to buddy and while he was dancing joey should have taken a 2x4 against his jewels.

Excellent

True love is risking life and limb for the woman you love against a brute weighing a hundred pounds more than you and a foot taller. Great tale with a happy ending.

Sweet Story, But...

Unless they were just going to run off to City Hall even a small wedding would probably take at least 3 months to pull off anyway, so her parents' condition wasn't really much of a condition!

And frankly, if it was my kid, I'd get her on the pill, ask them to be discreet and give them permission to have sex before they get married,

Bigger Doesn't Always Mean Tougher

In school I was always one of the smallest kids in each grade until I reached the 6th grade. I had been picked on unmercifully. As a result I learned to fight back no matter how outmatched I was. I found out that even big guys hated being hurt. Meanwhile I built up a tolerance to pain. Then I started winning more fights than I was losing. And my challenges started dwindling. Following the 6th grade I underwent a monster growth spurt. Over the course of 15 months I shot up from 5'2" to 6'3". Fights were fewer and fewer. Then one day a bruiser on the football team decided he wanted to pound me into the turf. I was told later I took maybe a dozen of his best shots. Then I caught him on his jaw and he fell to the ground like a sack of concrete. He was out for a good 5 minutes, at least. That was my last fight in high school. No one picked on the 135-pound beanpole after that.

Brings back memories

I was that tall slender kid in High School that got picked on all the time and the girls wouldn't give me a second look. Right out of HS I went into the Marine Corps and after boot camp went from 6'1'' 140 lbs to 6'1" 185 pounds of solid muscle. While home on leave, all of a sudden girls who wouldn't look at me in HS wanted to dance with me and go out together. When I came back from Viet Nam I practiced karate and taught self defense; in my home State I was undefeated for my weight limit. I've said all of this to say this, Don't ever underestimate the smaller guys. Oh, I became a very successful business man and married a beautiful woman inside and out.

Anonymous 05/01/19 is an idiot!

I would never let some low life as Buddy ever dance with my wife if he threatened her like Buddy threatened Gloria. This anonymous is just another has been jock who after 10 years has a big beer gut and wants to pull a fast one over a husband. He should be ashamed of his stupid comment!

What a great story

AnonymousAnonymousalmost 3 years ago

Ok. I see this as more of someone’s daydream, than a story. No way buddy would have just started respecting him. The mace and bat were unfair in the fight, and buddy would have escalated it another day.

In my experience, people who never are tempted to cheat, have something in common with those who stay a virgin until they are married- It’s not moral fortitude, it’s lack of opportunity! If Gloria was a virgin, and this was a real story, she would have probably been 300 pounds! Sooo... a feel good story, but not really believable.

AnonymousAnonymousover 2 years ago

Story pretty good but DJH's endings could be more interesting.

Could

At the reunion,he could have let Buddy have one dance Gloria, not doing so wads just petty.

AnonymousAnonymousover 2 years ago

A comment on what one of the Anon’s said. “ If a girl stays a virgin, she must be 300 pounds”.

I think what he is really saying is, opportunity comes more to those, who are good looking. For example, everyone always says that women want “ bad boys”. Actually, this is my take. Men who are really good looking and buff, are hit on by women all the time. They have no incentive to treat these women good, so they tend to be shallow and narcissistic. Women by the droves, fall in love with them, and try to change them. It never works. I wish I had a nickel, for every fat, unattractive man or woman, who proclaimed to the world, “ I would never cheat”. The difference between those that do, or do not, somewhat boils down to opportunity. But there are exceptions to the rule. I once dated a hot girl, who was 17 and a virgin. She promised her grandfather on his death bed, she would stay one till married. I did talk her once into doing anal, and she dumped me shortly after that. Virgins back in the 70’s, were not uncommon. I usually set a one date rule. If I didn’t see some form of affection after the first date, I moved on. Being a fisherman, I would equate it to not fishing” unproductive water”. As much as women try to change bad boys, men try to loosen up prudish women. It is a waste of time, and effort. I migrated to dating women who were sexually promiscuous. Most women decide by the age of 16, what they will, and will not do in bed. I found it tiresome to try to “ train” them, so I focused on those who were more sexually liberated. Here is an example. Some women despise oral sex, and think it is dirty. They can’t even concentrate on getting an orgasm, because they are too self conscious. Other women grab your dick, and swallow it in one move. They are confidant in their sexuality, and want to prove to you, they are the best lay you will have in your life. Which one, do you want in the sack?

Btw- 4 stars.

I feel sprry for Buddy's wife, he clearly settled and is still in love/lust with Gloria.

AnonymousAnonymous2 months ago

I almost feel bad for Buddy. Almost. Also, Gloria is a nurse working for local doctors. Oh boy, let's hope she can fend off the advances of the sleazy doctor(s) that inevitably will show up. Seen that kind of LW story all too often and they often fall foul of those snakes.
