Story does a good job of trying to explore the psyche of a cuckold husband. It mixes the voyeur feelings with conscious dark hesitant thoughts of wanting her impregnated - but not to term. The husband faces his fears that his wife will fall in love with Charles, a "regular lover". She minimized her feelings for the "regular", but still recognized and didn't deny her affection for him. Existence of those feelings contrasted nicely with the raw lust between her and the young black man, Tommy.
