The crew you wrote about could be picked up and set down on a railroad anywhere in the country and they'd feel at home. Or at least they would have back when pay phones still existed and phone calls cost a dime. These days, not so much.

I'm on a disability from the RRB and enjoy stories set around trains and railroads. I took my turns running to the convenience store for beer while we doubled this one long hill we had. Well written with a bittersweet ending.
