Click here- Some of you may have read my story "Through Steam and Glass." It's one of my first stories and I always look at it and go "I could have done this/that/the other thing better." That story was originally a scene in this chapter, with Michelle as the main character. I felt, however, that it made the chapter bloated and wasn't necessary, so I pulled it out and set it to the side, where it turned into a stand-alone tale. A case of "addition by subtraction."
- I enjoyed writing the Michelle/Garrett scene at the end, however, I always felt the crux of this chapter was their talk on the mountain. Not only does it develop Michelle's character, but it lays bare what's unique about Garrett - his ability to listen. He's a passive, reactionary character. I didn't want him to be the magical guy who "fixes" women. That's boring and regressive. I wanted him to be a catalyst, someone who is there to kickstart the main character's journey.
- The story chapters are all song titles. I love music. It's a theme throughout my writing and the basis for one of my favorite stories, "Sally Cinnamon."
