Cruel and Unusual

"I do not object, Your Honor," she said suddenly, turning back to the judge. "In fact, Creekside has a remarkable success rate. In the five years that it has been in operation, several hundred offenders have completed the program and almost none have reoffended."

"Very well," the judge sighed again, "since both the defendant and the state have such enthusiasm for cruel and unusual punishment, who am I to stand in the way?"

With that the judge lifted his gavel and said, "Charles Rogers Gemet, I sentence you to a program of correction and rehabilitation at the California Men's Correctional Facility at Creekside. You are remanded to the custody of the California Department of Corrections."

He brought the gavel down on the desk with a decisive bang.
