You are doing a simply smashing job of setting just the right tone, between John's eager naivete and Val's gentle "instruction." Keep up the good work! I haven't quite made up my mind whether there's an internally-credible way to include John's mum in the evolution of the story, but if you want to go that way, I'm sure you'll think of something!
