I was sobbing now, watching Vic's face as the realization of what had happened began to dawn on him.

Partly at being angry with himself for what happened and partly doubting everything that happened is the way his wife said it happened.
Either way, that 'mistake' would probably be the catalyst for the husband to reconsider his long term relationship and future with his wife.
