He stood up and finished undressing. He took his bathrobe from the closet, put it on and walked into the bathroom.
Bonita knew, he thought, leaning on the sink and staring at his reflection in the mirror. She understood. He had let them take his boat, it was up to him to try to save their child if there was even the slightest chance of success. Jeezum crow, the one person in the world who understood him best was an eleven year old girl.
He got in the shower and nearly dozed off under the warm spray. He heard Mary call his name, and turned off the water. He dried himself and got dressed. Mary and Hannah were sitting at the table when he entered the kitchen. The room was warm and filled with the aroma of the chili. He sat down and looked at his wife and his daughter. He spooned up a bite of the chili and thought that it was very good to be alive.
