Chapter 4 Headed to work.

Tuesday - Second week:

The alarm went off early, I got up and got showered, shaved and dressed. Went in to fix me some breakfast and put together my stuff for work. I was to have an early meeting with the boss to let him know that I would be resigning my position.

While eating breakfast I went through some more of the phone messages and managed to delete about 25 as not important.

I needed to leave work as early as possible to pick up the drawing package for the apartment complex that I was interested in buying. I found out from my uncle that his engineering firm had done all of the engineering work for it for the architectural firm that designed the buildings. So I suspect that most of the changes I found needed on my initial inspection were contractor related.

The drive to work was pretty much routine and I got there just as Bob was walking in.

"Well, the prodigal son returns." Was his comment as I got out of the truck.

"Har, har, har." Was my reply grinning.

"So, rich guy, when are you resigning?" He asked.

"I'll tender it today pending the end of my vacation time." I said.

"What I figured. Let's head to the restaurant across the street and get a cup of coffee." He said.

We both walked in and sat our stuff in his office and headed back out.

We got our caffeine and sat down. "So Scott, is there anyway I can talk you into heading the project we talked about before you retire a rich man?" he asked.

"I believe that Tony can handle it just fine with a little coaching in a few places." I said.

"Yeah, you are right. OK, can I get you to at least coach him through those few rough places we identified then?"

I mulled it over and thought that I could do that with only a day or so each week needed here in the office.

"I could be up for that. It would only require me to be in the office about a day a week. I would be good with that. I could spend a couple of hours or so this morning outlining some of the stuff for him to get started on. I need to leave around noon or just after to pick up some documents on my way home though." I said. "Then come back in for a while on Friday morning to see where he's at."

"I appreciate that. Do you have anyone that you know that would be a good hire to replace you in the long term? It wouldn't have to be someone with your skills to start with but someone that you think would work up to it." Bob asked.

"Hm, let me think." after a few seconds passed. "I know of one young man that graduated two years ago that is working in Chicago that would be good. There may be another but he is married and in St. Louis. Don't know if he would be willing to uproot or not. Let me make a couple of phone calls tonight and see if either or both would be interested in an interview."

"Sounds good. Now let's see if we can get Tony started. I think he is just about done with the effort he was assigned and should have some time today to work with you for a couple of hours." Bob said.

We went back to the office and Tony was just about finished with getting some stuff together for a 10:00 phone con on what he was finishing up. He and I sat down with the notes from the initial meeting that Bob and I attended and laid out a plan of action on getting the ball rolling.

Tony said, "I'm glad to have a chance to work with you on this."

"Don't mistake my helping you with the fact that I will only be here for about a day a week to help you tackle this project with you working closely with me on a daily basis. I will also just be a phone call away if you need a sounding board or something I can quickly help with. This project is yours baby." I said.

"Even so, I welcome the opportunity to pick your brain for this." He replied.

We worked until time for him to have his phone call which lasted about 30 minutes then we took a short break before finishing just before noon. I left telling him that I would check back in on Friday to see how he was doing and see if he needed any help fleshing out the work tasking.

I left the office around noon having tendered my resignation upon the full use of my leave. They are going to cut me a check for my comp time of 80 hours that I will pick up on Friday when I come back in. I will then sign a contractor agreement to help Tony with the project after my last official day and will then be a consultant to the company responsible for my own benefits.

I got in the truck and called Terry letting him know that I would be past to pick up the drawing package for the complex around 1:30. He said he would be there and would like to speak to me for a few minutes.

-----

I decided to stop by the widow's house that has the RV for sale to let her know that I would take it contingent on having it checked out at a dealer I know. She was home so I wrote her a Ten Thousand dollar down payment for her to hold while I had it looked over. I told her I would be back in the morning to pick it up and take it to the dealer.

She was ecstatic. I told her I wanted the car dolly to go along with it. She again tried to talk me into the car they had. I started to say no but decided to look it over. She let me take it for a test drive and I felt it would be good for the twins to have and much more reliable than the clunker they were currently driving.

"I'll take it. I'll be back in the morning to pick it and the RV up to take to the dealer for checkout. I should be here around 9:30. So if you will have the title for the car ready, I'll write you a check for it as well. Please, I encourage you to call the credit union and make sure that my checks will clear." I said.

I left Mt. Vernon and headed to Fairfield to pick up the drawings. After meeting with Terry and getting the drawings, I headed to Dairy Queen to see if either of the girls were working. They weren't but their shift manager told me where they lived and thought I might find them at home. I didn't say anything about my knowing where their Gram's lived and left. I needed someone to drive my truck back since Lance was busy at the farm and Betty still had a week and a half to work. She had wanted to quit immediately but I convinced her to give them two weeks notice.

I pulled up in front of the house and Kenz was just getting out of their car with the groceries. "Hey young lady, what are you up to?" I asked.

"Scott! How did you find us?" She asked.

I walked up and grabbed two bags and carried them in behind her saying, "I stopped at DQ and they told me where you lived."

"What brings you here? Rich guy!"

"So you've heard the news then?" more a statement than a question.

"Oh yeah. Your the talk of the DQ and town since you've been spotted hanging around Carson's office among other places."

"Really, why are you here now that you are so well off."

"I have a favor to ask if one of you are free in the morning?"

"Neither of us have to be to work until 3:30 tomorrow afternoon." She said. "So either one of us are available. What do you need."

"I need one or both of you to go with me to Mt. Vernon to help me pick up a couple of vehicles that I am about to buy. I need one of you to drive my truck back here so I can drop one off at a dealer to have it checked out. I'll pay you for your time."

Kala walked into the kitchen just as I said that and said, "Road trip? I'm in and you don't have to pay me."

"Me too and me either." Chimed in Kenz.

"Great, is 8:30 a good time to pick you both up? I told the lady I'd be there around 9:30."

"That's fine with me." They both said at the same time.

"Great." I said, just as Gram's walked in.

"I thought I heard a male voice in here." She said. Then, "OH! MY! GOD! You're him!"

"Gram's, this is Scott Stevens, Scott this is our grandmother Betsy Mullen." Kala said.

"Pleased to me you Mrs. Mullen." I said holding out my hand to shake hers.

"Please, just call me Gram's the girls do." Taking my hand and blushing. "I...I..didn't mean to burst out like that. I...It's just we've not had a multi-millionaire visit here before."

Laughing, "I'm trying to get used to it myself." I said. "Having trouble wrapping my head around all that's happened the past couple of weeks."

"I can certainly understand how that could be." Gram's said. "What are your plans now that you don't have to work?"

"Well, for starters, I plan on hijacking your two granddaughters in the morning to go to Mt. Vernon to help me bring back a motor coach and a car I am planning on buying from a widow there. Then I have to look over the design plans for the apartment complex down the road that was shutdown due to funding. I'm hoping to purchase it and start it up again. I am still going to be doing a bit of consulting for Warhammer Engineering about a day a week to help bring another engineer up to speed on a project I was supposed to start before I fit the Cinderella Slipper last week." I said. "Then if all goes well, I plan on traveling some to see all 50 states. I have some other projects in mind as well."

"Sounds like your going to be busy." She said. "I like that."

"If you have a few minutes, I'd like to show you my prized rose bushes." She said.

"Sure, I'd like that." Turning and winking at the two girls whose eyes were as big as saucers with a grin.

She led me outside with, "You two get the groceries put away."

-----

As we walked to where the rose buses were behind the garage she asked, "What is going on with you and my two granddaughters?"

"Well, after learning their plight last week from the Pizza Hut incident, I decided to make them my pet project to see if I could help them rise above their problems." I said. "The seem like such sweet girls."

"Oh, they are. I can't believe how they have managed to keep themselves from going down the path that bitch daughter of mine has gone."

That comment spun my head around as I responded with, "OH?"

"Surprised to hear a mother talk about her own flesh and blood like that aren't you?" More a statement than a question.

"Quite frankly, yes."

"Well what she has done to these two, she deserves to be horse whipped."

"If you succeed in getting these two granddaughters of mine to a better place in life, you will have captured an old ladies heart."

I blushed.

"I'm certainly going to try. Part of why I'm taking them tomorrow is the widow I am buying the items off of has a nice small car that I don't need but I plan on giving it to your two granddaughters. They just don't know it yet. I also have another idea in mind to help them out." I said.

She leaned over and kissed me on the cheek. "Thank you young man. You are being so kind."

We headed back to the house with her smiling brightly.

-----

"Wonder what they are talking about?" Kala asked rhetorically.

"I don't know but, I'm sure Gram's is bending his ear about something." Kenz replied.

"Yeah, I'm sure she is."

-----

Gram's and I got back in the house and I said, "Well, I need to go home so I can start on this drawing package. I'll see you two bright and early at 8:30 in the morning. Thank you for agreeing to help me out."

I said my goodbyes and left.

-----

I headed home the back roads and pulled in to the back of the house. Sure enough there were a couple of paparazzi parked at the edge of the blacktop with Sam laying down in front of them keeping them at bay. One of the cars was parked on the edge of our property right at the entrance to the driveway. Not enough to keep a car or pickup from getting in but certainly in the way of the Freightliner and hopper bottom trailer.

This shit has got to stop.

I dawned my coveralls and baseball cap along with my dark sunglasses and snuck out the back to the shed where the truck and trailer were parked. I fired that baby up and headed out the driveway knowing that Lance had planned on loading a load of corn to take to market from one of the bins.

I paused long enough to be sure no cars were coming and pulled out making the turn toward the bins catching the back end of one of the cars with the trailer and drug it into the other car both parked partially in the grass on our property and not on the road right-of-way.

That pissed them off. I called the sheriff and one of the deputies came out along with a state cop. I had already posted a no trespassing sign in both corners of the yard and they were blatantly ignoring them. They ended up getting a citation and one threatened to sue me.

The deputy filled out the damage report for the trailer and the cars so I could go to my insurance and let them handle collecting the damages to the trailer. It was determined that they were both at fault for illegal parking and trespassing.

The damage to the trailer was minimal but was going to cost them a few thousand dollars. It was not going to effect us using it this fall but their insurance would have to lease us a trailer for use until it was fixed.

I pulled the truck and trailer into the bin driveway and positioned it to load. I then called Lance and told him what had happened and that the trailer was still road safe and ready to load.

I went back into the house once they had gotten their cars towed and they were gone and took the drawing package and spread it out on the dinning room table and started going over it.

-----

Sure enough the engineering work had been done by my uncles company on the rental complex and it was errors on the sub contractors side that needed corrected. I called Terry and let him know that I needed to meet with the bank about getting the errors corrected before I would make an offer.

He called back in about a half an hour and the bank had set up a meeting with the general contractor (GC) that had been in charge of the work for the next day at 2:00 pm at the complex. The bank was still holding some of the payment for the work that had already been done as leverage. I was to meet with the loan officer, the GC and Terry at that time.

I still needed to go over the rest of the design package so set down to work.

I was about a third of the way through the package and found what I thought might be a couple of other areas that I needed to look over tomorrow.

Betty called and asked what I was doing for supper. I hadn't given it a thought with everything I had going on and told her so. She offered to pick up meals for the three of us and bring them buy since Lance was on his way to load the truck for early tomorrow. I told her to do so and I would pay her back.

-----

They both showed up about the same time for supper. Lance had just finished loading the truck for market tomorrow trying to finish out the last bin of grain so it would be ready for harvest. I told him to stop on his way back and look at new harvesters at the implement dealer tomorrow and have them come and give us a quote on trade in of the old one.

I pulled out my phone and showed them the pictures of what I did to the two idiots parked in front of the house.

Betty said, "Dang, Scott, you aren't going to put up with any of the BS are you?"

"Not if I have anything to say about it. They will probably try to sue but I already sent the pictures to our lawyer and faxed him copies of the police report so he is ready to pounce on them if they do."

Lance looked at the dinning room table and said, "What have you got there from uncle Sid?"

"That is the engineering drawings of the rental complex I'm trying to buy that was foreclosed on while under construction in Fairfield. Sid's firm did the design work and there are some things the sub contractors need to fix at their expense." I said.

"What happened to the mild mannered Scott that we used to know?" Betty asked.

"He's still there. I just decided that in some things, I was going to have to be hard line on to keep from being taken advantage of. I'm meeting with the loan officer at the bank, the GC and the reality tomorrow afternoon when we get back from Mt. Vernon."

"Wait," Lance said. "Who's we? I will be busy hauling grain and Betty has to work. Do you have a mouse in your pocket?"

"The girls and I. We're headed there to pick up a slightly used motor coach and a small car." I said grinning.

"What girls??" Betty asked in surprise.

"A set of twins in Fairfield I've taken on as a side project to help out. Their mother kicked them out last week and they are staying at their grandma's for now. They have had a rough life with their druggie mother."

"How old are they?" She asked.

"They just turned 18 in May after they graduated high school."

"They into drugs?" She then asked.

"No. They are pretty gun shy of that stuff thanks to their mother. They really want to amount to more."

"They cute?" Asked Lance.

"Yes they are. Though they've had to make due with good will clothes and stuff. They have started working at the DQ there."

"Names?" Betty asked.

"Makala and Makenz Jones. But they go by Kala and Kenz, Kenz is spelled, k e n then the letter z."

"Are they smart?" Lance asked.

"What, you two decided to be my mom now?" I asked joking.

Betty quipped back, "You need us to keep you on the straight and narrow."

"Yes mom." Laughing

"They both made the honor roll 4 or 5 times each year their Junior and Senior years while taking Algebra II and Pre-cal as well as Chem I and II, Senior physics and AP English/literature. So they did as well as I did in school or better." I said.

"Height, weight?" Betty said.

"About 5' 2" and maybe a hundred pounds or so. Kinda petite." I said.

"Picture?" She asked.

"No."

"Get one."

Laughing, "I'll see if I can get them to pose tomorrow."

We had finished supper and I paid Betty back for picking it up.

"I need to get back to reviewing the drawings for tomorrow." I said.

Betty went into the living room and started screening the answering machine noting any calls I needed to return.

Lance went back out to finish getting the truck readied for the trip to the grain terminal tomorrow.

I made the two calls I had promised Bob at Warhammer. Jack from St. Louis was not interested in uprooting his family which I suspected would be the case. Tim on the other hand was from just North of Mt. Vernon in the next county and was eager to talk to Bob. I told him I would give Bob his phone and email so he could contact him.

I sent Bob Tim's contact info via email and shut down my computer for the night.

They both left in about 45 minutes. I only had two calls I needed to return and those were not urgent.

I went to bed about 9:30 to get a good nights sleep.

Great story but I have to agree about wishing for longer chapters.

Too short

Chapter too short with not a lot of forward movement in the plot. Story promises to be interesting but let us see more at one time.
