5. Conclusion

We all have our own personal feelings, resonances, and stereotypes about names. Perhaps then, it is better not to comment too directly on any particular name in any particular category, but to let the reader find for themselves what is interesting (if anything) about the results. Why does the name Alice turn up so much more often in the BDSM category than others? Do the writers have an appreciation for the works (and aesthetics) of Lewis Caroll or is it a subliminal hang-over from listening to too muchAlice in Chains during their teenage years? Who knows and it would be dangerous to leap to conclusions. What sounds reasonable to me may be different for you.

Still, some general comments might be in order. It is perhaps a positive thing that the Lesbian list, for example, was so similar to the general list. Authors are not perhaps, pulling out super-butch or super-feminine names for their characters. On the other hand, the Transgender and Cross-Dressing list was one of the most non-standard of those studied, suggesting that authors and characters are choosing more highly individual characters for those transitioning. Mature, as might be expected, focused more on names that suggested an older generation, as did Loving Wives to some extent. This wasn't reflected so much in Incest - perhaps because for every mother seducing a son, that category has a father getting it on with a daughter and everything evens out. Sci-Fi and Fantasy showed an expected swing towards Sci-Fi and Fantasy sounding names (as well as more clearly Greek, French and Germanic origin names), although the initial list not being geared for this maybe affected the results.

So, how is an author to use this information?

Well if your succubus is about to do your main character to death, remember that the name Lilith has been done to death in fantasy.

If you want infidelity to come as a complete shock to your male main characters, don't call the wife Linda -- everyone knows they're trouble! Call her Clara and he'll never see the bull coming -- at least until the plot requires it.

And I hate to break it to you, but, despite what you've written, it seems unlikely that your sweet Jenny is actually still a virgin. Its not so much defloration as it is desertification by this point.

On the other hand, double down! Readers have expectations and who are we to disappoint them? We all know where we stand with Betsy, the busty lusty neighbour from next door. Or call your character Dominique and your reader will be able to feel the whip and candle-wax before she's finished zipping up the latex.

Hopefully, whichever strategy you're going for, I hope there's a name somewhere here that helps you.

Very well done. I think that the site should have a Tag cloud with specific names of characters, and I think that it wouldn't take much resources or bandwidth to do it.

Personally, I have aversions to stories that don't have aptly named characters, as I think most people do. With some stories you can get over it, but some are so wrong that it takes the pleasure out of reading.

For the few stories that I have written, I tried to avoid names and rather used their relationships as much as I could: husband, wife, sister, mother etc. But when a story is longer, I searched hard to find “the right” name for the character; according to their age and role…

Well done for sure.

Wow! Nice work. The movement of names in different categories was too confusing to follow; "Anna (+6 to 10th)" - huh? Does this mean 10th in the current category and 16th in the general category? Too much calculation needed to figure out where everyone stands. Believe it would be better to just list category rank and general rank. OR, if really interested in the movement list Category rank, movement and general rank i.e. Anna(10th,+6, 16th)

The exceptions, while totally understandable, are unfortunate. I believe literotica or someone would have to come up with some serious funding to bypass the limitations.

Still, good work and your methodology (using literotica search) could be used within a specific category if an author is really agonizing about a name for a character. As it appears that many authors cannot even keep the names of their characters consistent within the stories, I'm not sure many authors give that much thought to the names.

Thanks for writing this up.

I didn't score your work. I hate to admit this - I lost you about the middle of the first page. My eyes crossed over, and my mind numbed like an ice cream brain freeze. It wasn't your info deluge. It was my poor math comprehension skills.

For what it's worth, I keep an old telephone book and just thumb through it until I find something interesting in a name and go with that. I don't think the readers of my forty stories even care if I used another name previously - except for one guy! I referenced the character in another story and got his first name wrong in the new story. He pointed it out in chapter and verse. Really a picky critic and the only one who noted it.

Mary is not a very sexy name. It has no business being in a literotica story. #SorryNotSorry
