As brush-offs go, it was not unkind. There'd be no hard feelings. She'd go back to being Amy's somewhat older, slightly ditzy friend; I'd go back to being Amy's really-nice-guy housemate. Who lent a hand when one was needed and kindly tipped his hat when it was time to go.

Hector, I just reread this after a couple of years, finding I didn't really remember it at all. It's still wonderful. (Reading my other comment, I realize the title is definitely part of why the ending was so unexpected.) At any rate, I wish you were still posting. Once again, thank you for a very short, sweet, and believable little story.
