Epilogue:
While awaiting trial, my divorce was granted. Early on I wanted Rhonda dead, but having her live knowing she contributed to Gloria's death is punishment enough.
The pardoned convict is now back serving another life sentence. He deserves a fate worse than death.
As part of the court proceedings, I was evaluated for being sane. The counselor understood my frustration. After my exoneration, I hired her and she has guided me back to the sane side of living. Whoever I had become died with that single gunshot. At least that's my hope. The hair on my neck still stands up when I smell smoke.
I thought I might be a pariah, but found just the opposite to be true. I'd done what a lot of people wished would happen. Getting my job back didn't happen as my notoriety wasn't worth it to them. I don't find fault with that. Even so, it didn't take long for someone to take a chance on me. Not believing myself to be a good role model, I've quit taking gigs as a referee.
Although propositioned by every local newspaper and television station, I refuse to do interviews. Book offers are shredded.
I don't go to the shooting range anymore. Only went to learn how to do one thing, you know. It took several weeks to make those bullseyes beg for mercy.
Every once in a while, I'll pull up that Friday night photo. Bitterness when I look at Rhonda, and sadness when I look at Gloria. It always seems to bring a tear to my eye.

How about that? If we keep electing people with the acumen of twelve year olds, then it seems like the right to pardon needs to expire a month before an election, or be completely eliminated.
It may be your grandmother, mother, wife, daughter, or granddaughter. For that matter, why do they have to be related to you for you to care? How were they supposed to know that death lay waiting for them, when they pulled into that parking spot? It's too late for me, but quit thinking in two colors and start finding people capable of thinking in purple, before it's too late for you.

Anonymous5 days agoI've read this a number of times and it's a great favourite of mine. My only gripe is that it's yet another story where the wronged husband ducked out of confronting the offending wife. He may not have been interested to hear what she had to say but we the readers certainly are! Although the angle of Gloria and the politician made for a gripping drama it still felt a little incomplete to have Rhonda drop out of the story so completely. None of that changes the fact that M&M is one of the best on this site, though.

Anonymous4 months agoNot a bad read. It wasn't as dark as I had imagined, however. I kind of wished it had stayed more on track with the results of Rhonda's cheating rather than leading off into the whole Gloria and politician side of things. A more realistic shot fired would have also been preferred. Hardly believable that he "dropped it and it went off." That's like saying "I was cleaning it and it went off," when you get caught mistreating. I digress.
Still a pretty good read.

I'm not American, I'm baffled by your gun laws, particularly the slavish adhereing to the 2nd amendment given that reloading too0k about 2 minutes for most people when it was writtten now a fool can kill a hundred people in that time with weapons of war so stupidly available to all.
BigBlueKat5 months agoBeing from KY, I’m familiar with Bevin’s pardons and the subsequent crimes those criminals committed. In this state, the premise of this story is very believable.
It’s also a state where certain parts still operate on the unofficial legal theories of “justifiable homicide” and/or “he needed killin”. 5*

Anonymous9 months agoAn excellent story, one of M&M's finest so it was disappointing to read his swipe at anons at the beginning. A man who expresses surprise that women in their thirties can be good looking clearly has issues of his own that he would be better occupied addressing than aiming jibes at others.

CimenRunar11 months agoI enjoyed reading this, but feel it is probably too shallow to warrant a rating higher than 3*. We never found out what Rhonda actually did at these parties, though the braless comments suggest she certainly went topless at least, probably down to the sexy panties. How many did she attend and what prompted her to do so? Her guilt at the end should have driven her to finally be honest and explain these things. I agree with an earlier comment that too much of the story focused on the revenge events. Another page was need to make this 5*
