But this isn't regular fire. It's retribution. Old Testament anger. The forest's last stand, devouring us all.
I go deep within. Reaching to my inner core of power to plummet into another part of my consciousness. A safety mechanism. I inhale with a wheezing gasp, eyes snapping open to find myself sprawled on the bedroom floor.
"Asher," I murmur to the empty room, still feeling hands circling my throat. "About fucking time you found me."

Don't worry. I have no intention of abandoning this story. However, this next chapter has been taking a bit due to how lengthy and climactic it is (and having a life outside of writing lol). It's kind of important that I get this particular chapter right because the rest of the story will heavily rely on how well I pull it off. Quality takes time, my friend!
