Click hereThe solicitor also gave her a letter and it turned out that Bill had found out she was pregnant and had been sent away. Sadly fate took a hand in matters as he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, but as he didn't want to cause any fuss he decided not to tell her. Instead, he was making provisions for her and the child that he and Betty had always wanted but never been able to have.
He had died just a week before Nancy had returned to London with their daughter which was why she had been unable to get him to answer the door when she went to the flat on her return. When she went looking at the dance hall it was a tearful Miss Symes that had told her of his death.
Nancy would always remember the last words that Bill had written in the letter, words that were etched into her heart forever... "Save the last dance for me."
"Yes, he was," Nancy said as she looked with love at the picture that sat in pride of place on the fireplace and whispered under her breath, "I will always save the last dance for you."
How appropriate that the Argentine Tango launched their lovemaking. Dancing --- "in the old-fashioned way", as the song goes --- is one of the most intimate communications a man and woman can have when they learn each other's messages, bodies, rhythms.
Bravo for a story about lovely dancing that was both romantic and erotic in addition to being achingly poignant.
First time a story on Lit has left me teary eyed. Thank you for sharing this lovely story.
Another old man with tears in his eyes. Memories of dancing with my wife 60 years ago.
Thank you for a lovely story.
I am practically speechless. I most definitely was not expecting that surprise ending. I had imagined a happy ending with them falling in love and getting to spend part of their lives together. It simply was one of the best stories I've ever read here on Lit. It is a tremendous love story, I loved the fire and passion that built up between them despite their age difference. Thank you!
5* I am so glad you prompted me to read this story. There is nothing else to say .......other than you owe me a box of tissues. A.
Damn you, I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face. Thank you for writing this wonderful tale.
