Very short some would say, but I thought it was a perfect vignette. Nicely done.
The Ear likes it. 5 stars. The potential for a game-changer, or a sad ending. Almost made me cry. More, please. Keep writing.
The BEAR
This reminds me of a particular Twilight zone episode about a group of neighbors when they think the end is coming. This story ends with a neighborhood facing the end with dignity and realizing that being with one another at the end and going in an instant is about as good as it will ever get. In the TZ episode, the exact opposite thing happens: the neighbors turn into animals and try to drag a man and his family out of their new fallout shelter and take it for themselves. That TZ story ends when the all clear is given and the neighbors are all apologetic and embarrassed as they've been exposed as cowards and thugs. Your story is very well crafted and it would have made a worthy TZ episode to offset the other one :-) Well done!
A sweet and lovely story! You have distilled quite a bit of grief, love, kindness and human dignity into this short slice (forgive me) of life. 5*
Really, that is all we are getting?
I recall from my youth jokes / jestures regarding a nuclear strike .... go into a toilet, disrobe, put your head between your knees, and kiss the world goodbye.....
Damn!
