Postscript: about a week after I posted this, the former student who inspired the story reached out to me about something completely unrelated to the story (Okay, mostly unrelated: looking for ideas on instructing college level history classes). Of course, I helped her, but given the timing, there is a nagging doubt here.

What an amazing story! Very well written and I appreciate the comments at the end. Concerning the postscript, have you heard anything more from your former student? It sounds like she may be teaching college now. That inspires a number of story possibilities.
