"Even if I said I broke up with Paul and that I haven't been with him since you left and I want you and only you."

Kris looked at her liked he was waiting for a punch line. "Are you serious, what changed you mind?"

"You did, I was devastated when you left and it brought back all the horrors of your original 'death'. My feelings for Paul never matched the ones I had for you. I think he recognised that as well and accepted my decision. Paul has taken a long voyage contract; he is going to be away for months. I am hoping you will move in with me."

"I wasn't expecting this, are you sure?"

"Yes, I was trying so hard to make the three of us work and papering over the fact it didn't feel right. I want exactly what you described the night you left. I want to be all in with you, just us, intimate together in everything, making plans and living our best lives."

After numerous reassurances, Kris moved in, they remained friends with Paul and saw him off on his trip. Heather cried as Kris thanked Paul for looking after her and wished him the best of luck. She kissed Paul goodbye on the cheek and implored him to take care of himself.

"No worries, there are no pirates where I am going."

Heather turned to Kris, "You know the thing that stuck in my mind most, the fact you said you loved me too much to share me. That was the one thing you differed about and I am so thankful you did my love."

End.

I’m no legal expert but with Kris declared dead, he doesn’t get just resume his life where it left off.

It sucks but he is the outsider. Leave Paul and Heather to the life they built.

A horrible situation but the lawyers would sort it either way. The second marriage annulled Kris's estate restored to him. Paul evicted from Kris's inherited home. Then the tell all book the tv shows, Heather painted as the villian in the public's eye and her fragile mental health nosediving.

A great story as commented below the threesome was unnecessary but this is Literotica! Nicely navigated to a conclusion.

A great story and I loved how you landed it.

“ You know the thing that stuck in my mind most, the fact you said you loved me too much to share me.” Another place, another time, even with the same people, and the opposite line would work. We humans are goofy people.

Well that one came to a decent end. I’m glad she chose Kris. The throuple thing would never have worked out. Very good story.

Right decision.

I don't think "me and Heather are married" a correct sentence in the english speaking world.

This structure occurs over and over ... distracting from an excellent Author's stories.

This was a good story and a good concept that was actually marred by the "literotica" aspect of it, namely the threesome. It was a mis-step in the story and soured the readers on Heather. I mean, her "let's all date and see how it ends up" scenario is brutally self centered to start with, but that was just the icing on the shit-cake. In fact, I think having Heather "decide" at all was a poor choice for the story. If it was me, I would have continued with the dating plot, but then had Kris not be able to carry on. He could tell Heather something like, "Just the thought of being able to come back to you was the only thing that kept me alive for all those years, but now to be so close and not have you... I wish I had died instead." and then have him bugger off. Heather goes back to Paul and the story continues from Kris POV - until one day, a freshly divorced Heather appears on the scene. Same ending more or less, less shitty, feels like both Kris and Heather had some agency in a way that validates them as human beings. Paul still gets the shaft unfortunately, but there's no way for the third wheel not to in this kind of story.

I don't know why, but for some reason your stories are very hit or miss to me. I think this one was a miss, not a giant one, but a miss all the same. I wanted to like Heather more, but it was hard to do so because of how transparently selfish she was. She was in a situation where it would have been kinder for her to make a choice, any choice, than to drag those two guys through competing for her affection. A decent person frankly, wouldn't have done that... which makes me wonder why would anyone compete in the first place?

Oh dear. Both muskybore and nixxdog found it necessary to comment continuing their delusion that their minuscule thoughts matter. You two should leave the comments to readers with an IQ above 50.
