Well, it wasn't totally safe back in those days. There were still all the other STDs to worry about, but most of us figured they could be dealt with medically if we happened to catch one. Then AIDs came around and condom use became a rule (to most, anyway) rather than the exception.

Those days will be greatly missed. I much prefer bareback sex, but that's easy for me to say since my opportunities for man to man sex are very limited. Still, one of my big fantasies is to have 10 or 20 guys line up and fuck me, one after the other, all of them bareback.
