*****

Fresh snow littered the ground, and Liline's boots left a trail of impressions every step from her car to the motel. Hourly Inn, the small squat just off the highway and at the very edge of Shelter. The Angels apparently weren't very picky about the nicety of their lounging's, just concerned with keeping the filth of the town as far from them as possible during the preparation period and leading up to the cleansing.

Liline took a preemptive breath as she approached the doors, her sigh misting the crisp air. The L shaped building had two floors and about twenty plus rooms total, but the one she was searching for was easy to find on the bottom. Room 112, she would've paid someone to make the search for it take longer, anything to prolong this inevitable interaction.

When the tension-filled meeting in the pizzeria was over, Liline set up another one with the hopes that she could show November what Shelter really was now. Just the two of them and no soldiers or backup sisters to harrow her vision, only a clean and clear perspective on the town.

The reason she wasn't looking forward to it, was because she knew that convincing a stern angel of the fifth sphere that Shelter was more than just a place of debauchery and sin, wasn't going to be easy. After their first conversation, it was pretty clear where she stood on the matter and didn't appear to be the type of person to change her mind willy-nilly.

She approached the door, a foam cup of coffee in her hand, hoping that a stuck-up girl like November would be fond of the drink and help win her favor for today. "Here goes everything." She huffed another breath of visible vapors as she raised her fist and knocked on the door.

Barely a moment passed before November pulled it open and stood in the doorway looking unimpressed. "Hmm, only forty-seven seconds passed nine, to be truthful I expected much worse." Liline blinked a few times, "But again, who am I to expect punctuality from a spawn of evil."

Her comment was ignored and Liline just offered her the friendliest grin she could possibly manage without having it look overly ridiculous. "I do my best." She held out the cup of hot coffee. November however, simply shot it a look then raised an eyebrow at Liline. "I took a guess and thought you might be fond of some mortal tastes." ...Silence... "No?" ...More silent staring... "Well if not it would be wise to take it."

"And why would it be?" The Angel spoke up again. "For all I know you're attempting to dampen my resolve with some kind of demonic concoction."

Liline felt the physical urge to roll her eyes, but managed to pass it off through a slow blink. "Well there's no need for you to drink it if you'd prefer not to. But it would be wise to as you know many humans live in Shelter among us now. It would help if you made an attempt to at least look mortal if you wish to preserve their ignorance to the divine." She explained, "Also, if you put on some human looking clothing as well, that might help." Liline addressed the fine white silk night gown with very intricate ornate golden trimming along the sleeves and sides. The designs looked like impossibly small Latin script to Liline's eye, but hopefully to humans it would be too small to see.

November remained silent after that, seeming to contemplate the demons words of advice before nodding, "I suppose I'll heed your suggestions this time. But don't get used to it." She warned, reaching out and taking the coffee.

Liline continued to smile, "Good, you get dressed, it's time you see my town for what it really is."

Minutes Later: Leaving Hourly Inn

The angel took her time getting dressed, clearly unsympathetic about leaving a Succubus out in the cold. She was sure her inner Hellfire would keep her warm during the wait.

But after she put on some 'reasonably' believable clothes for the modern era mortal eyes. An expensive looking white silken top and black dress pants with golden high heels that had sparkling jeweled straps. Putting Sherriff Liline's uniform to utter shame, and not even bothering with a coat for the cold. Like her hellish companion for this endeavor, she had an inner fire keeping her warm as well. Except hers was sacred and divine.

She held her head high as they walked to Liline's cruiser, and even continued to after they got inside and began to drive away.

In silence at first, Liline just keeping her eyes on the road as she drove to the more populated areas of Shelter. November's head turned away from the driver to look out the window at the passersby, just quietly watching the miniscule amount of townsfolk driving or walking pass.

Until finally November broke the silence with a question, "How is the son of Cain fairing?"

Liline actually flinched from the suddenness of the question, and no leading up to it either. But she shrugged a shoulder and asked, "Which one?"

November scoffed, "The younger." Still not bringing her watchful gaze back to Liline.

The Sherriff paused, "...He's getting by." She should've anticipated her to prod about Ian, but even if she did she had a feeling questions about him were bound to not sit well with her.

"Oh do go on. I'd love to hear more about the crown jewel of this pit." She quipped, earning a slight huff from Liline. "Just how well is he getting by?"

"He's trying to mend the damage he's done in the past. To...others. He hurt someone recently and...in turn he was hurt by the Urul." She explained, normally she would be quite tight lipped with these details, but the angels made the situation life or death for all. No time to be keeping everything hidden, "The experience has left that kind and caring boy shaken, and he's become withdrawn. He just wants to live peacefully away from all this, so he's been staying home from school until further notice."

She heard another scoff from the angel, "School." She repeated disbelievingly.

"Yes, school. We have them here, elementary, middle, and high schools. Even a college university. Ever since human began living in Shelter it's become a better place, it's not what you think it is." Liline tried to impress upon her.

But still November seemed to not care in the slightest, "Regardless, it's good that the son of Cain is no longer fornicating anymore. If he could live without sin that would be much preferred, given that his father has been on a warpath in Nod since his door was sealed. The old fool has been wreaking havoc on the outer realms like the mad man he is."

"Heh, well good to know the old asshole isn't doing too good." She smirked, pleased to hear of his hardships.

They continued to drive for a while, mainly Liline trying to show November all of the new places which have been built since Ian and the humans' arrival.

Many of which were acknowledged barely with a wave of the hand or an uninterested look from her passenger. Even when she brought her to the elementary school, showing where the children living in the town went to learn and grow.

Still, she remained stern, "Hmph, teach them to be lovers of sin and corrupt their young minds no doubt."

Liline barely managed to stifle a groan, "I can assure you Shelter is not what you think." Her voice beginning to show her frustration, "It's nice here, it's not a Hell hole like Sodom or Gomorrah."

"To a demoness like yourself I'm sure it is." November replied coldly.

Sheriff Liline sighed, "No, anyone can love it here. Even angels! We have an angel living among us even now you've met him."

"He who lies with demons." Again, her words were the same temperature as the snow coming down outside.

"And yet he has not fallen from grace. What does that tell you?" Liline asked, getting even more aggravated at how November still had yet to look at her and preferred staring out the window. "I can prove it to you that anyone can love it here. What do you like to do for fun?"

That caught the angel by surprise, definitely not a question she anticipated getting asked today. But still, she answered proudly, "My greatest joy is human happiness. That should be obvious."

Liline thought for a moment, looking out the window at the cold empty school building she brought her too. Only then did it occur to her why the elementary school was closed and not lit up teaching the youths of the town.

It was a snow day! School was out today as it had been nearly the whole week do to the January snowfalls coming in. And if kids weren't here on a day out, there was only one place they could be.

She nodded, "I think I know a good stop then."

Liline put the car back into drive and drove with determination to the closest park she could find. And just as she expected, this is where the children were.

She parked across the way so that November would have an excellent view of the goings on. Families were out and about, parents probably dragged out of their homes by excited children ready to go play in the snow since school was closed again. But still they had sleepy smiles on their faces as they helped their overly excited kids build snowmen, push them down the hilled slopes of snow on sleds. High-pitched screams from the youth's excitement every time they went down, having the time of their lives here.

There was the slightest tilt of November's head as she looked through the glass, pure of heart and innocent souls jumping and running about. Having snowball fights and being tackled into the powdery substance by their parents. Rolling about and making snow...angels.

November could sense the demonic presence here though, among the women in the park. She could sense they were infernal, demons. But not as how she had seen them in the wars of old, they were smiling, laughing and playing. Some of these children, mortal souls but...she could here some of them calling to both the mortal men and female Succubi.

Calling them...Mommy and Daddy.

"I told you. This town is not what you think, it's become so much more then that. It's better now with human influence, so many of the residence, my friends, have taken human lovers. Human kindness is stronger than any evil you know, and since Cain was sealed away the Succubi have started living with humans. Living LIKE the humans, and becoming better creatures because of them." Liline tried to explain, shifting in her seat to talk more directly to her despite her still not looking back. "Shelter...is not...evil. Not anymore, because of Ian, and because of them."

For a moment she thought she was getting through to her, only to have her reply, "I said it before and I will say it again. We will preserve as many pure souls as we can, the rest are expendable. The cost of humans elevating the demons will be difficult, but they have no place in this world anymore."

Liline's shoulders fell, "You don't seem to understand, we're not what you think we are." Her tone becoming more adamant now, "I know that my love for Ian, the human-"

"The son of Cain." November interrupted.

"The human!" Liline raised her voice slightly, "My love for him has made me better than what I once was. I'm a better person now, I care about him so much. I'm able to resist the temptations of the flesh because of him! And if you had any understanding of what it was like to be a Succubus you wouldn't be so quick to judge." She finished.

And for the first time in the entire car ride, November turned her swan like neck to face the Sherriff. She blinked once, and emotionlessly said, "I wouldn't be so weak."

Sundown

Hours dragged on painfully for Liline. No matter what she threw at this stuck up angel, she just deflected it with her snobby remarks and 'pish, posh' attitude. Acting pretty much like the epitome of everything that aggravated Liline to the highest degree.

Everywhere they drove, every smiling face or hard worker, every healthy youth or settled down Succubus, none of it mattered to her. She remained steadfast in her opinions on how Shelter needed to be taken care of, along with every man, woman, and child that refused to believe it. Despite how she claimed nothing pleased her more than human happiness, she seemed to have no care for the few mortals that were living with the demons by choice. Only the majority of the population who were unaware of the supernatural forces around them were worth saving in her eyes.

Liline sighed for probably the thousandth time today and wrung her fists on the leather steering wheel. She was beginning to lose hope in reasoning with this woman, after exhausting just about every idea she had, she was ready to turn the car around and loop back to the motel, drop the bitch off then call it a night. Ian was waiting at home and although Sin was with him, she didn't like being away from him for too long in his current state.

Currently the pair was stopped at a red light, the lonely road still being sprinkled with a light downfall of snow. Now that the winter months were here, the days grew shorter and shorter, so even though it was only five o' clock, it looked as if it was getting well into night with the sun barely leaving any light left in the sky.

Before the stop light could turn green though, and Liline could make the turn to head back, the scanner in her cruiser crackled to life. 'Sherriff Adams?'

November's head darted to the electronic device on the dash, so quickly that Liline nearly jumped from her sudden movement. She gave her an almost amused look, then reached to grab the mic off the hook, bringing it to her lips and clicking the button. "Yeah, what is it?"

More crackling as the female voice on the other end of the line spoke again, 'We've got a call about a three, one, four, at the Ocean Side Cinema, please advise.'

"Oh fuck me." Liline groaned, "Figures." There were very few actual crimes ever reported in Shelter, not counting the occasional rape call which was usually dismissed when looked into, given that they were mostly only 'perceived' by onlookers as rape. Succubi and their humans can sometimes meet under rough circumstances, Hell, even herself and Ian did partially. But that's part of the magic between them, and the rest of the time it was just roleplay.

People like what they like after all.

"What is that?" November questioned, unfamiliar with the odd code they spoke.

"Public Indecency, or Indecent exposure. We get calls like this more often than any other around here. In a mixed town where most of the people are unaware that demons exist and the population is about eighty percent Succubus, these are definitely the most frequent." She explained, and the red light turned green. Liline clicked the mic button again, "I'm close by I'll get on it." Then hung it back up.

November looked irritated, "Well return me to my inn and get back to whatever business you must conduct." She waved her hand and looked back out her passenger side window.

"Hourly Inn is all the way on the other side of town, the movie theater is right around the corner. I can just get this call done very quick and take you back after." Liline pressed down on the gas, driving in the direction away from the motel and towards the cinema. But the angel's reflection beside her of course did not look pleased with this, "It won't take long, you can handle a simple detour."

Her amber eyes returned to Liline and narrowed, for the second time today actually giving the Sister her attention. "And do you expect me to believe that you're not attempting to lure me into a trap and slay me?"

Liline's head actually fell for a moment, her raven locks dipping down around her before springing back up as she lifted her head again. "You don't have to do anything, you don't even have to get out of the car. It can be a ride-a-long, it'll take a few minutes, you don't have to get involved, or you can be a witness to it and see that we really don't have much crime here. But witness only! No smiting or otherwise getting involved in my job in any way."

The angel still looked at her with detest and contempt, trying to sniff out any potential ill intent like she did the day they met. If anything though, the Sherriff just looked to be trying to maintain a mortal job despite not being mortal herself.

For whatever reason.

Regardless, November just scoffed again and looked back out the window, "Very well. Do what you must, and I will accompany you to confirm no mortals are in danger. Try anything, and you will face divine fury."

"Yeah, yeah."

The drive to the cinema was only about five minutes from where they were, so Liline was quick to call it in that she was on site to answer. She parked in the lot, put on her hat, and exited the cruiser, heading over to the entrance with November following closely behind. It was the middle of the week and a snow day so not too many people took the opportunity to go to the movies, giving the officer and the angel no obstacles on the way in. Ocean Side was a large standalone theater with a row of plate glass doors at the front and back, and stone steps leading up to them. Teal green lights illuminated the name of the building above Liline as she went inside. November kept her hands folded professionally behind her back with her chin up in her stride, eyeing the Sherriff's every move and the area around her. The interior was expansive, with red and green patterned carpet covering the entire floor. Three food stands in the center, left, and right areas of the space.

By the front desk were two women, Succubi, Liline could sense it from here and both looked rather bored with their position and predicament. They both recoiled and shrank away when they saw the aura of an approaching warrior angel, but Liline quickly calmed them, ensuring that they were safe and no conflict was going to be had between angels and demons tonight. "Hopefully."

When informed about the call and asked what the problem was, all Liline was offered was the two of them pointing to a rather crotchety looking older woman. Mumbling to herself over by the left hallway which lead to half of the auditoriums, she practically stomped her feet as she paced about making the nearby Succubus usher noticeably uncomfortable.

Liline shrugged and made her way over, sending a quick look over to November and saying, "Maybe she'll be somebody you deem worth saving." She passed off this comment as a futile attempt at making fun of her refusal to bend her opinion. They approached her and before Liline could even announce herself, the woman began spouting rudely.

"Well I have never in all of my years been exposed to such indecency!" She shouted, waddling to Liline and shaking her fist in the direction of the hall. "I use to think this was a decent establishment but my God!"

"Okay, okay Ma'am, what's the problem here." Liline raised her hands and tried to prevent herself from laughing at her exasperated groaning.

The older woman went on to explain that she had been minding her business and looking forward to a quiet night to herself at the theater. Only to have her hopes crushed as the young couple barged into the same auditorium she was in. Giggling and fumbling about like children, rudely disrupting her experience in the movie. And to make matters worse, they began to...in her words...canoodle, in the chairs.
