The only problem was, even after seven months, we were still trying. Then our lives, as we knew them, were totally and completely demolished, and sent on an uncorrectable new course.

I'd arrived home from work on a Tuesday evening and started reviewing coursework for one of my classes in my master's degree program when the phone rang. I recognized the number in the caller ID as being Sunny's parents' home.

"Hey!" I answered, expecting to hear Jerry or Janette.

It was Suzie on the other end of the line. Not once before had she ever phoned us.

"Gary! Is Sunny there?"

Suzie's voice was beyond anguished. She was sobbing, and the sheer tone of her voice made my blood run cold.

"No, Suzie, she's in class tonight. What's wrong?"

"When she gets home," she cried, "can you tell her Dad is dead?"

How does this story have only 1,500 views?

This is a great story told with style and grace. It deserves a much wider readership. I hope the author writes more.
