First time reading on this app that I got lost in the story. So well written. Such consistent, down-to-earth characters. Believable plot. So sweet. Excellent job well done. I’d shake your hand if i could. Thank you for allowing us experience this story.

When I first started this story, I abandoned it. I didn't like it. Several times afterward I did the same. Finally today, I gave it another try and continued reading the story. I became engrossed and really appreciated the story.

Five very solid stars, for this unique wrinkle of the soup kitchen volunteer trope. Again, five stars.

Great redemption arc for David.

I just this again, again. I don't know how many times, now, but I keep coming back to it. And I keep ending up with tears in my eyes multiple times. 70 year old men aren't supposed to cry, but I do.

I know you have stopped writing (at least here). I hope you are writing for profit, now. I also hope you check on your comments here once in a while. I just want to share my thanks (again). Fair winds and following seas to you. My hope for you is that you find that which you truly seek.

5 stars. What an emotionally stretching story that leaped over the gamut of complete depression and loss to joyful love and hope for the future. Thank you!

AnonymousAnonymous2 months ago

This was raw, touching and moving. David feels real, his embarrassment and awkwardness at attention feels real, his grief feels real. Sadie's OCD feels real, her meticulousness feels real, her anxiety and insecurity feels real. It's not even easy, but natural to be compassionate with the characters and cheer them on to find their happiness again.

Thank you for the story.

@anonymous 11 days ago. If you read the authors biography, you will note that he said that some misbegotten b#$&&$# had stolen his works and sold them on Amazon, and that as a result no further works would ever see the light of day. I hope that individual falls into a shithole and drowns for depriving us of such a gifted writer

AnonymousAnonymous3 months ago

All of this author's stories are great and leave you feeling good. I can't believe he quit writing. I can see them not being posted on this site.

Does anybody knowhere he may post other stories? About 4 of these stories are on good reads. But I don't think that's the real author. I just can't see someone with this much talent stopping because they're mad. I can see someone having tragedies in their life or illness, or burnout and stopping. Anyone know the real story behind this author.

Serious now: get hold of a decent script writer and then an agent. You need it to be optioned

Read this not long after I first discovered Lit, it remains a great story with great characters, perfect pacing and no waffle. Just perfect. 5⭐️ Ppfzz.

NavypilotNavypilot7 months ago

a story with a very human feel to it which engages the reader. you have such a strong storyline/backstory to have everything fall into place just so towards the end all seems to convenient almost lazy way out. might make an interesting project for you to explore the issues that might be raised and how your characters deal with them as their relationship develops.

lerenardruselerenardruse8 months ago

I agree with one of the comments below, turn this into a script, I'm sure Hallmark would jump all over it. What a fantastic story.

Wonderful, fantastic story with all the elements to make a great movie.

Contrary to what some anonymous commentators say, grief causes different reactions in people, you ably portrayed one reaction to it, utter despair.

Thank you for a 5 star story.

AnonymousAnonymous10 months ago

Reading earlier comments, it is certainly a 5* story BUT David is really a weak pathetic character. Amber was married to a wimp. Too wimpy mighty long to act on the IRS and found his balls when Sadie was served.

AnonymousAnonymous10 months ago

Dick, sorry David, tries to commit suicide after his wife's death.....guess he did not know her that well to chose a cowardly route. Thankfully the story took a turn with the intro of the shelter

AnonymousAnonymous11 months ago

Finally David found his balls and made it a great 5* story

AnonymousAnonymous11 months ago

ASSHOLE DAVID SHOULD HAVE USED HIS MONEY TO DONATE TO THE KITCHEN AND HIS SKILLS TO HELP, NOT BE A CUNT AND WALK LIKE THE PATHETIC WEAK WIMP OF A MAN HE IS!!! PRIVILEGED WHITE FUCKER

Excellent - this would actually make a wonderful movie - ever consider doing it as a screenplay?

This is one of the best I have read here. But only one thing David Never did sing the song He wrote for His Wife Amber and that was a shame. I cannot Imagine a squeal to this so the Song I guess is gone forever. That is the only bad Part of the story!

FlynnTaggartFlynnTaggartabout 1 year ago

Going into this I didn't look at the word or page count, expected this to be a one page tragedy, Was pleased to see a further 8 pages of healing with likable characters and interesting events. Great story, wonderfully written and a joy to read. 5 stars and faved.

Very sweet and well written. Not a typical story for the site—the part that could be most easily excised was the sex—but lovely.

This is a proper novel not erotica. It doesn't belong here. It needs a bigger audience.

Damn it. I just finished The Promise and before that The Gift. I get no break. I just got my tears stopped and maybe I’ll get to clear out my nose before bedtime. Both stories hit me deeply. My wife recently passed away and she made me promise to find another wife. In her words: If you don’t have another wife, I will have failed to provide you a pleasant, safe home to live in where you can enjoy the rest of your life. Then in the space of two hours the following day, she died of an aortic aneurysm. These brought it all back.

Damn. I've been reading here for some time, I don't know how long. Over a year, I know. In that time I've refrained from ever pronouncing anyone's story as "The best!" But this is it. Thank you.

Phenomenal story that hits at the very core of the good in humans. If one is not touched emotionally by this story they must be dealing with numbing issues that need compassion themselves. Brillantly written with a heart of delightfulness that touches our very essence to love others greater than ourselves. Keep on writing heartfelt stories that stir our hearts. best wishes.......

I was glad to see you're still getting feedback about this story.

I just re-read it for what's probably the sixth time, and I was dripping tears at least five times this morning. It really is a standout.

One of the very best stories on this site. The fact that the Promise is not fulfilled until the final line is sublime.

Durken82Durken82over 1 year ago

It seemed a little long but better that than done that are too short. I teared up at Sadie’s revelation at the end.

NickCaveNickCaveover 1 year ago

It would have been nice if there was something detailing how successful the annual fundraiser was. Some obscene amount of money with donations coming in from all over the country. David's fame would be short-lived so you couldn't really expect every year to produce so many donations...maybe 2-3 more years at most. Enough money to invest and keep the doors open forever.

Something along those lines. I'm sure you'd know best how to make it work. I would have loved to see at least one more page on nothing but happiness and positivity - for Sadie & David, for the Kitchen. Now that Sadie/The Kitchen had all of that extra space thanks to Abernathy's peace offering & gift, perhaps they were able to slowly open a small, 10, 15 maybe 20 beds overnight shelter that they rotated the homeless through...IF they wanted it. Or, perhaps they were able to construct a very small clinic. Only one or two doctors who volunteered their time to provide free basic medical services.

I know this is supposed to be romantic but this guy just comes off as pathetic. And yes of course the love of your life dies so of course the automatic response is to kill yourself because it's romantic?

I went completely past my first two phases of crying. I skipped past the Onion Chopping Ninjas, ignored the voice shouting, "I'm not crying; You're Crying!", and straight into (Strikes Pose) "MANLY TEARS!" This is an excellent story, and the ending had tears in my eyes, and me asking the author,"What is your problem with my Feels?"
